ArcelorMittal Hochfeld has ordered a high-capacity wire rod mill with Meerdrive technology.

The order from the Duisberg, Germany group was originally placed two years ago but was suspended due to the economic downturn. It was recently reinstated and the mill will commence production in spring 2012.

The wire rod blocks will be equipped with a new individual drive technology – Meerdrive – developed by SMS Meer.

The new wire rod mill has been designed to roll technically demanding grades, to the closest of tolerances. It is designed for an annual capacity of 690kt/y.

The SMS Meer supply includes a walking-beam furnace, the mechanical and electrical equipment of the mill train, the supply systems, coil handling equipment, the entire rolling and cooling technology as well as construction.
