Gerdau Ameristeel contracted Tenova Core to provide a revamp of its Consteel system at the Charlotte, North Carolina plant.

Consteel is the continuous steelmaking process, which preheats and feeds scrap and other raw materials directly into the EAF via a conveying system through the EAF sidewall.

The system located at Charlotte was supplied in 1989 and was the first commercial installation of the technology.

The project scope includes newly designed preheat pans and preheat hoods to reduce the refractory maintenance of the conveying system.

The current Consteel water seal system will be replaced with a dry seal system. Tenova Core will also revamp the connecting car that joins the EAF to the conveyor.
