There are more climate and environmental initiatives to come from the European Commission according to its work programme for 2013.

Greenhouse gases as well as energy efficiency and renewables are on the agenda, together with a comprehensive climate adaptation strategy. Further topics include waste legislation and a review of air quality legislation.

The climate adaptation strategy is to ‘provide a long term perspective on how the EU will move ahead from its 2020 targets to continue the trajectory towards a low carbon economy to a comprehensive framework for the period to 2030.’

More concretely: The Commission wants to ensure that the greenhouse gas reduction objective of 80-95% compared to 1990 levels will be reached in 2050 and wants to provide a long-term perspective for investments until 2030. Furthermore, it wants to foster long term competitiveness, security of supply and sustainability.
