UEA based Emirates Steel started up its heavy section mill last month which is part of its Phase 2 expansion programme. The mill can now produce large-size sections, beams, columns and sheet piles.
Emirates Steel became an integrated plant in June 2009 with the completion of Phase 1 of a four phase growth programme which sees DRI modules and EAFs used to provide the steel. Phase 2 sees steel production increase by 1.4Mt/y which started up in 2010. Total DRI capacity id now 3.2Mt/y while steelmaking capacity is 2.8Mt/y.
Italy’s Danieli is the provider of the equipment which includes Energiron DRI modules built in a joint venture with Tenova HYL.
