Doubt has been cast over the accuracy of Australia's packaging recycling figures as Boomerang Alliance – a consortium of environmental lobby groups – said to the media to highlight what it called a ‘black hole’ in reports on recycling figures from the Australian Packaging Covenant (APC).

Jeff Angel, national convenor for Boomerang Alliance, which represents a total of 17 environmental groups, said: "We estimate over 320kt of used beverage container packaging is missing [from the APC figures], meaning the APC is even further away from the 65% recycling target it was supposed to have reached by 2010."
