The Japanese Course 50 programme set up to find new technologies to minimise CO2 emissions in steelmaking (see STI Sept 2011 p36) has signed an agreement with the Swedish research company Swerea Mefos and ore miner LKAB to use the LKAB experimental blast furnace at the Mefos site in Luleå for trials to develop a modified blast furnace process aimed at substantially reducing CO2 emissions.

The test campaign will take place in April – May 2012.

This same blast furnace has also been used for the European ULCOS programme in which the BF top gas is stripped of CO2 and recycled to the tuyeres (see STI Sept 2011 p33).
