British Steel has supplied more than 1,100 rails of 39e1 profile rail for the extension of the West Midlands Metro. The rails, weighing almost 850t, have been supplied to the Midland Metro Alliance and have been used in the Wednesbury to Brierley Hill extension.

The project is comprised of two sections. The first section between Wednesbury and Dudley town centre is in the final stages of construction. The second section, the continuation of the line to Merry Hill Shopping Centre, will shortly enter delivery.

Darren Cole, UK account manager for rail at British Steel, said: “As the UK’s only manufacturer of rail, British Steel are delighted to be playing a part in this game-changing scheme and look forward to seeing how the project impacts public transport accessibility across the West Midlands.”

It is hoped that the extension can lead to significant regeneration and economic growth and benefit areas of the West Midlands currently underserved by public transport options.

Tom Maplethorpe, Alliance director, added: "Working with British Steel, a UK supplier, not only ensures the highest quality rail for this vital extension but also aligns perfectly with our commitment to sustainable supply chain management and supporting local industries much closer to home."
