ArcelorMittal has postponed the planned construction of new 700kt/y coke-oven batteries in Gijon, northern Spain due to the ongoing poor economic environment.

An investment of €147M had been announced in May last year with the batteries scheduled to start up in Q1 2014. This would make Gijon the sole supplier of coke for ArcelorMittal's blast furnaces in Asturias.

ArcelorMittal did not say how many batteries the investment would involve.
