Electroreduction of carbon dioxide (ERC) combines captured CO2 with water to produce high value materials, such as formic acid - suitable for use in pickling steel - and production of formate. It can also be adapted to produce oxalic acid, methanol, and other products. Companies adopting ERC stand to make significant profit from these products in addition to cap and trade benefits (or carbon credits) from reducing their emissions of CO2.
