
Kobe Steel's emissions reduction breakthrough

Japanese steelmaker Kobe Steel has announced that it has successfully demonstrated the technology that can reduce a significant amount of CO2 emissions from blast furnace operations, combining the technologies of Midrex in the engineering business and the blast furnace operation technology in the iron and steel business. This achievement is a result of the integrated efforts of the Kobe Steel Group (also known as the KOBELCO Group) leveraging its diverse businesses. The demonstration test was conducted for a month at a large blast furnace (4,844 m3) at the Kakogawa Works in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan in October 2020.

Basque Hydrogen Corridor: Sarralle signs MOU

The Repsol group, through Petronor, its Basque subsidiary, presented its strategy for the development of the Basque Hydrogen Corridor (BH2C). The presentation took place at the Euskalduna Palace in Bilbao, Spain. According to the company, BH2C's development is unlike other similar projects and aims to be comprehensive, incorporating the entire value chain.

It will soon be one year since COVID-19 graced the western world with its presence. As I write this Leader (in mid-February) I am aware that this time last year none of us, bar the residents of Wuhan, had any idea of ‘lockdown’. Up until last March, relying upon Zoom for meetings and conferences, and online ordering for everything from books to frying pans, were alien concepts. I used to enjoy shopping, wandering around department stores, perusing the shelves of a high street bookstore, drinking cappuccino and eating cake in a café and then paying a small fortune for a multi-storey car park. Oh, the good old days!
