The Sukinda Chromite Mine in the Jajpur district of Odisha in India, owned by Tata Steel, has been awarded the prestigious 16th National Award for Excellence in Energy Management for 2014-15.

The award was presented to the company’s management team, headed by Haridrumat Behera, head of mining, at a ceremony in Hyderabad, India on 3 September.

The annual award recognises the efforts of industry in the field of energy conservation and the use of renewable energy.

This year, the Sukina Chromite Mine was the only recipient of the award. The judges were impressed by the mine’s use of solar lights and solar pipe lights, turbo ventilators and a waste water management and disposal system.
