SMS Meer of Germany has successfully developed what it claims to be the first hydraulic horizontal forging machine. The SMI 430/8 MN is used for the pre-forming of parts, which are subsequently given their intermediate or final form in the die. The machine reduces set-up times and increases productivity.
According to SMS, its new horizontal forging machine is a special type of the SMX radial forging machine, which, with the aid of forming tools, can generate a defined mass distribution in the forgings that can subsequently be processed in closed-die forging machines.
The new machine offers an integrated die shifting device, which enables a second die form to be used within one forging process thus minimizing set-up times for the customer and increasing output.
SMS has sold its first machine complete with two forging manipulators and an additional manipulator for fully automatic loading and unloding to a Japanese customer.
