SAIL has been expanding capacity at all its major steel plants in India, in places such as Rourkela, Bokaro, Durgapur, Bhilai and IISCO, and has incurred costs of INR 445.36bn (US$7.5bn) over the past seven years.

This is all part of a proposed INR 618.7bn (US$10bn) project which started in 2006-07 with INR 1.01bn (US$17M) investment.

The aim is to raise its overall capacity to 20.23Mt/y. According to company reports, it spent INR 89.93bn (US$1.5bn) on capex over the last fiscal year, the lowest amount since 2009-10.
