German steelmaker Salzgitter Flachstahl has contracted SMS Siemag to revamp its converter C.

The revamp will increase the specific volume of converter C by approximately 18%, claims SMS.

“The new converter vessel will be arranged in the trunnion ring by the lamella suspension system, a proven SMS development, which ensures an unrestrained arrangement of the vessel,” the company said, adding that the latest generation of lamella suspension system is low maintenance and allows optimum natural cooling because of the specifically adapted clearance between the vessel and the trunnion ring.

Converter C is the third converter that Salzgitter Flachstahl has revamped using SMS Siemag’s lamella suspension system.

Commissioning is scheduled for end-2015.
