The Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) has started production from its coke ovens battery complex at its Rourkela steel plant.

The coke dry quenching plant, coal handling, and coal chemicals unit have also become operational. The total investment in the complex is around INR 14bn (US$2.4M), and the new coke ovens battery is top charged and has a computerised heating control system.

The seven metre tall battery of ovens will produce 768kt of coke per year, and SAIL has adopted pollution abatement systems to enhance its commitment to environmentally friendly coke making.
