The Metal Recycling Association of India has estimated that the country’s import of steel scrap for the FY 2012/13 would be up 25% from the previous year, to 7.5Mt.
It is cheaper for southern and western Indian steel plants to import scrap to feed their furnaces, than to transport sponge iron (DRI) from eastern regions of the country.
