ABB has won three contracts collectively worth $29M from ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe to modernise the company’s 7-stand hot strip rolling mill No 1 in its Duisburg-Bruckhausen steel plant, Germany.
ABB will supply automation for drives, drives power systems and equipment and related project services. The orders were booked in Q1 2011.
The project is part of ThyssenKrupp’s on going initiative to modernise its hot strip mill facilities with automation and drive systems to produce a new range of steel products.
The company operates four hot strip mills with a capacity of 15Mt/y.
After the modernisation it will produce lightweight steel for the automotive industry, material for recyclable tin cans, as well as steel for oil and gas pipelines.
It will also start producing electrical steel for use in wind turbines, hybrid engines and other applications. For these grades of steel, consistent properties and precise dimensions throughout the entire hot strip are critical.
