China’s construction industry targets to realize annual output growth of more than 15% in the 12th Five-Year Plan period (2011-2015), according to a five-year development plan for the industry released by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development (MOHURD) on August 19.
The plan targets a 10% reduction in energy consumption for buildings in this period.
The proportion of buildings using steel structures will see a rise. Steel structures are moving in an upward trend, says a report by Guotai Junan Securities, predicting that by 2015, output of structure steels will reach 50-65Mt.
Developing steel structures is an important way of saving energy in building construction. MOHURD say that regulators have decided to co-establish a coordination mechanism to promote the application of high-strength steel in buildings, which is believed to provide conditions for rapid development of the steel structure industry.
A rise in consumption of high strength rebar with a hardness above HRB400 is expected with 45% of total rebar consumption being high strength during the five-year period.
