Baosteel Group has commenced the construction of a steelplant, continuous casting and hot rolling complex in Zhanjiang in the south of Guangdong province, China. It is aimed at the medium and high-end market and is scheduled to come into operation around 2016.

Baosteel Group will build three slab casting machines with a total annual capacity of 8.749Mt. Two of the casters will start operation by the end of 2015 with the third relocated from another site and due to come on stream by the end of September 2016.

Baosteel Group would build four energy-saving reheat furnaces to supply its 2250mm hot mill due to come into operation in March 2016. Annual capacity will be 5.5Mt.

Baosteel Group, the parent company of the Shanghai-listed Baosteel, is China’s second largest steel producer making 42.7Mt in 2012. It has chosen Zhanjiang as its new steel base for producing high value-added products.
