The core components of a wire rod mill at Amsteel Mills in Banting, Malaysia have been modernised and the mill restarted.
The work carried out by SMS Meer of Germany, will enable the company to boost its productivity and to roll surface-quenched and tempered rebars at a speed of up to 105m/sec.
The plant's ten-stand wire rod block and the high-speed loop laying head were replaced with SMS Meer's most modern models. In addition, the 17-year-old water cooling section with pinch roll unit was replaced. A process model for optimum temperature control will now ensure that the demanded microstructure properties are reliably achieved – while maintaining the close tolerances.
Amsteel together with Megasteel belongs to the steel division of the Lion Group, one of the largest companies in Malaysia, a conglomerate with headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.
