Abul Khair Steel has started production at its new high-capacity rebar rolling mill, built by SMS Group, in Sitakunda, Bangladesh.

The mill, designed to be the world’s fastest and produce 1.6Mt of deformed bars annually, aims to meet the country’s increasing demand for high-quality construction steel.

Bernhard Steenken, chief sales officer, APAC and MEA, at SMS, said: “This project shows SMS Group’s expertise in delivering innovative rolling mill technology that combines speed, efficiency, and sustainability.

“By achieving record-breaking speeds and ensuring reliable operations, we are helping Abul Khair Steel serve its customers more effectively and contribute to Bangladesh’s infrastructure growth.”

The mill is engineered to manufacture deformed bars ranging from 8mm to 40mm in diameter and can reach speeds of up to 55m per second (when producing 2x10mm deformed bar).

The mill includes features such as the SMS ECOFlame+ burner, which is designed for low Nox emissions and installed in the reheating furnace to reduce energy consumption.

As well as supporting growing infrastructure, the investment from Abul Khair Steel, reflects the company’s commitment to adopting more environmentally responsible manufacturing practices.
