Vietnam crackdown on small steel mills

The Vietnamese government has said new steel projects using outdated technology would not be licensed.

It said that, previously, some localities had granted licences to small-scale steel plants outside planning guidelines.

Their use of antique technology had led to environment pollution and wasted energy.

It believes this to be a reason for a sudden increase in electricity consumption in recent months.

Under the national master plan for the steel industry for 2007-15, Vietnam hopes to produce 15 to 18Mt/y of steel for domestic use and export.
