Shipments of steel to shipbuilders have grown 37.2% year-on-year for Russian steelmaker OJSC Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK).

The company claims to have enjoyed a long-standing track record of success with the shipbuilding industry and supplying up to half of all metal products sold to Russian shipbuilders.

Expansion of steel production for shipbuilding followed the commissioning of MMK’s Mill 5000 in 2009, which produces thick steel plate for the Russian naval fleet, tankers and modern ice-class vessels. The steel produced at the mill is certified by Lloyds Register, Bureau Veritas of France, the American Bureau of Shipping, Det Norske Veritas in Norway, Germanischer Lloyd, and the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping.

The MMK Group produced 13Mt of crude steel in 2014 and 12.2Mt of commercial steel products.
