MMK increases automotive shipments and launches new product catalogue

OJSC Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK), a leading supplier of ferrous metal products for car plants and facilities producing components for the automotive industry, increased metal shipments to the automotive industry in 2016 by 12.6% year-on-year to 473kt.

The share of automotive sheet sales in MMK’s overall domestic sales structure grew to 6.5% from 6%, which is significant because production of light motor vehicles in Russia fell 7.4% last year, according to Russia’s Federal State Statistics Service.

Sales to foreign car manufacturers with assembly plants in Russia in particular demonstrate the company’s achievements, claims MMK. Metal sales to these companies grew 34.5% year-on-year to 27kt in 2016 from 20kt the previous year. Since 2013, shipments to international automotive corporations that have production facilities in Russia grew more than fourfold.  MMK plans to significantly increase metal shipments to localised car makers this year.

The company’s success in the world of automotive coincides with the development of a new English language version of its metal products catalogue for the sector, which will help carmakers choose the steel grades they require. Currently, it includes 29 car parts, with new items to be added in due course.

Data is presented in a convenient format with easy navigation and should, claims MMK, meet with consumer expectations. It is aimed at designers, engineers and manufacturing and procurement professionals in the car manufacturing business.

MMK recently published an interactive product catalogue sorted by steel type and grade (http://eng.mmk.ru/catalogs/metal_products/automotive_industry/). It is divided into sections on various steel grades and, claims MMK, enables consumers to find data on chemical composition, mechanical characteristics, thickness, sizes and other features of different steel grades.
